What is HIV?

HIV stands for human immunodeficiency virus, it infects cells of the human immune system and destroy immune function. HIV is lentivirus or slow virus (from the retrovirus family ) that causes AIDS.When this virus enters in the body, HIV begins to destroy the body's immune system by using the body's aggressive immune responses to the virus to infect, replicate and kill immune system cells and it works till the "Immune Deficiency". When immune system can no longer fulfill its role of fighting infection and disease it is called as "Immune Deficient".

The immune system is a biological structures of cells, organs and proteins that work together to defend and protect the body from bacteria, viruses and parasites.

Main Causes of HIV:-

  1. Unsafe sex
  2. Infected needles
  3. Breast milk
  4. Perinatal Transmission  

What is AIDS ?

AIDS stands for "Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome".AIDS is the most advanced stages of HIV infection when the immune system becomes irreparably damaged, engendering multiple infections and cancers, although an HIV-positive test result does not mean that a person has AIDS.

It can take a year to as long as 10 to 12 years to go from being infected with HIV to AIDS. AIDS is the stage when human body have a T cell count of 200 or less from the range from 500 to 1500.

Symptoms of HIV/AIDS:-

  1. Mild flu and swollen glands
  2. Loss of appetite
  3. Weight loss  
  4. Constant Fever
  5. Lesions in the Mouth
  6. Shortness of Breath
  7. Skin Rashes
  8. Swelling in the Joints
  9. Weakness
  10. Extreme Fatigue

Symptoms change with the progress from HIV to AIDS.

Presence of any above symptom does not mean that person is infected with HIV/AIDS. It should be diagnosed with doctors after finding any kind of above symptoms.

Prevention from HIV/AIDS Infection:-

  1. Avoid sex with anyone who has anonymous sexual partners
  2. Don't share persoanl items such as toothbrushes, razors etc
  3. Use disposable syringes and needles
  4. Ensure you get screened and certified Blood from HIV
