Stem Cells

What are "Stem cells"?

Stem Cells are specialized cells which are formed at the very beginning stages of human embryo development. These Cells found in all multi cellular organisms. They are characterized by the ability to renew themselves through mitotic cell division and differentiate into a diverse range of specialized cell types.Stem cells are unique because at beginning stage of development they are not specialized and have the capacity to develop into 130 different human tissue types.

Stem cells have the potential to develop into many different cell types in the body during early life and growth and also in many tissues stem cells serve as a sort of internal repair system, dividing essentially without limit to replenish other cells as long as the person is still alive. When a stem cell divides, each new cell has the potential either to remain a stem cell or become another type of cell with a more specialized function, such as a muscle cell, a red blood cell, or a brain cell.

Two main types of mammalian stem cells are:-

  1. Embryonic stem cells
  2. Adult stem cells

Medical experts says that stem cell therapy has the potential to dramatically change the treatment of human disease. They are looking to treat a wider variety of diseases including cancer, Parkinson, spinal cord injuries, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, multiple sclerosis, and muscle damage, amongst a number of other impairments and conditions.
